The 5 'ish Minute Facebook Video Hack

There's no question that video is all the rage on Facebook..but did you know that up to 85% of Facebook Users watch videos in their Facebook feed without the sound turned on?ª

How are you supposed to share your message if no one's listening?

   1. You can become a mime
   2. You can hire an expensive video editor to add overlays to your video to encourage people to turn on their sound
   3. Or, you can use this quick and free 5'ish Minute Hack to get more eyes and ears on your videos!

(We're calling it a 5'ish Minute hack because due to the length of your video it may take a little shorter, or longer to go through the steps)

The secret to getting more people to watch your videos on Facebook with the sound on, is to get them to reading your words within the video that tell them to watch and listen.

Facebook allows you to upload a transcription of your video that will overlay the text on the video.

At the beginning of your video you should be encouraging your watchers to click the video and enable their sound (this will be in your transcription and so it will show up for your viewers to read on the screen).

Typically transcriptions are expensive and take a day or more to get done, but we've discovered a quick and free way to get a transcription of your videos, and we'll show you how to do it in the video below.

In order to make use this hack you will need:

   1. A video that you have uploaded to Facebook
   2. A YouTube channel
   3. About 5 minutes

The trick to getting people to watch and listen to your video, is to get them to click on the video in their news feed and turn on their sound (if necessary). By uploading a transcript with text that tells them to do just that, you should see a significant bump in your viewership and conversion from your videos.

Here's how to do it:

   1. Record and upload your video to Facebook (make sure that you are encouraging people to click on the video and to turn on their sound so that text shows up in the transcription)

   2. Log into YouTube and upload the video to your YouTube channel (you may need to download the video from Facebook first, if you produced the video with Facebook Live)

  3. Once the video has uploaded and processed on YouTube, click on the Closed Captioning button on the video page. YouTube automatically produces closed captioning for your videos, though this can take some time depending on the length of your video

  4. When the green light appears under 'Published' on the Closed Captioning page, click on the box with the green light which will say 'English (Automatic)'

  5. On the next screen click 'Actions' and then download the .srt file (NOTE: Name the download using this name: filename.en_US.srt - where 'filename' can be whatever you want)

  6. Go back to your video on Facebook and click the small down arrow at the top corner of the box containing your video and click 'Edit Post'

  7. Then choose 'Captions' and then click the 'Upload SRT File' button

  8. If you have not named your video with the correct format, you will receive an error stating that the file must be named using: filename.en_US.srt. If need be, edit the filename with the correct format on your computer and re-upload to Facebook.

  9. Click 'Save' and then you will see that your annotations are now inserted into the video

[NOTE: You can edit the .srt files using Notepad on your computer before uploading them to Facebook, just make sure to save the file as a .srt when you have finished editing]
